Take also the Gravity Falls threads and Dipper/Pacifica. Most people on here who went nuts about that ship were guys, and most people who were angry until it got hints in the recent comics were guys. If you do a search of the female-dominated Gravity Falls spaces, girls were something like ten times more likely to ship Dipper with the triangle bad guy (a crackship no one talked about becoming canon) so most of the anger over Dipper/Pacifica not becoming canon came from men. It's the same with Marco here and people who ship him with Star, Jackie, or Hekapoo.
I would say that male shippers usually self-insert as the male protagonist and then put it into a harem scenario where the ultimate goal is having their waifu, who is "Best Girl," "win" the "protagonistbowl." This is especially obvious in shounen harem anime. It's about "you the viewer" choosing your "waifu." But there is a lot of it and a lot of dudes emotionally invested in their self-insert getting with their "waifu."
Ironically girls are sometimes the same, whether fujoshits or straight shippers, and have a self-insert and husbando, though sometimes with fujoshits it's just two hot guys they want to see kiss. Yurifags can be the same, two hot chicks scissoring is a common straight male fantasy.
Also, female shipping fandoms are usually much bigger and much more psycho and hysterical, it just doesn't mean that no overly invested shippers don't exist. They just self-insert as Finn and want to see him with their waifu Marceline or their waifu Bubblegum and get pissed and bitch for years when that doesn't happen. So still nuts, though they're probably less likely to go to the writers' houses.
