then you have the issue of environmental corrosion and weather damage to the elevator, from hurricanes down on earth to micrometeorite impacts in space, to omnipresent radiation damage, which may make an elevator not economical due to constant maintenance shutdowns if the damage happens to be more significant than we expected
there's a lot of engineering that needs to go into this, and we've done none of it so far past general ideas on napkins for fun
