Hey /sci/!

Can one of you math whizzes explain to me why 5(?5 - 2) / -1 is equal to 5(?5 - 2)?

I understand that you want to multiply the numerator by -1, but shouldn't that give you -5(?5 - 2)?

Where does the - in front of the 5 go?? Help!

It's not, and it doesn't say that in the picture.
It says 5(2 - ?5) / -1 is equal to 5(?5 - 2)

multiply by - 1/-1 does
NOT change value because - 1/-1=1

I'm still missing something. I see that I am mistaken, the answer doesn't say 5(?5 - 2), it says 5?5 - 2, but I'm not sure how that answer is arrived at. In step 3 it says "Distribute -1 over 2-?5" ...why?

I'll give you a step by step.
It's simple arithmetic.

$\frac{5(2-\sqrt5)}{-1} = -5(2-\sqrt5) = 5\cdot-(2-\sqrt5) = 5 (-2+\sqrt5) = 5 (\sqrt5-2)$

$\frac{5(2-\sqrt{5})}{-1} = \frac{10 - \sqrt{5^3}}{-1} = (-10) - (-\sqrt{5^3}) = \sqrt{5^3} -10 = 5(\sqrt{5} - 2)$
