brainlet failing to grasp basic electronic circuit analysis

Hello anons,

I feel literally retarded but I struggle to understand the principles behind this basic circuit (i'm not studying EES or anything related).

The question is to give the value the voltage meters 1 and 2 would show given two situations:
>rechargable battery = empty
>rechargable battery = full

My understanding is that when the battery is empty there will be no current over the battery which means the current trough the resister equals either -12v or 12v. and when the battery is fully charged the current trough the resistor equals 12-9v = 3v.

Im just not sure how the ground effects. Also, with the charger being an ideal current source. Does this mean that it will compensate for the fully charged battery by 9v?

Help a literal brainlet out please. There is no solution available so I can't confirm my assumptions.
