I am on my last attempt to pass a course based on the chapters 6-12 of this textbook. Are there any better books or ideally a really good youtube channel to learn from? I haven't learned anything from this dreadful text. Today I need to start again on the Euler-Lagrange equation then Hamilton's principle.

this book is really awful. used it like 12 years ago. you want to go with Taylor. students in my department actual convinced a textbook change to this when i was a student.

Taylor is for a class in classical mechanics, which can be quite mathematically challenging.
Start with a more comphrensive book. My favorite ugrad intro text is Randall's Physics for Scientists and Engineers; it's good as a 2 semester physics major's intro book.

I think if you study physics, you should never read a "physics for engineering" book.

Typically people start with a broad overview with Newtonian mechanics which is what those giant physics books have. Then once you've had a bit more mathematics you move onto a class in classical mechanics which has Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics.

You don't understand the mathematics. You need to forget newton-shit (which is an equivelant approach) and understand that NOW YOU PLAY WITH ENERGY, NOT FORCE.

ENERGY IS POTENTIAL TO MOTION
FORCE MAKES MOTION DIFFER

Both are just mathematical consepts. If you are engi-physicist, no wonder you don't understand. This is computational physics.

Now, we use energy potential. Lagragian is L=T-U
don't even try to undesrstand why.
Now minimize that shit's time-integral. You get a partial differential equation system. Mathematically force that to give a solution.

i do think that a lot of time is wasted beating around the bush on things when directly addressing the underlying math is instructive and unifying. for instance, the way physics textbooks explain tensors, jfc

This paper shows his ingeniosity. He is a grade A mathematican and a grade A physicist.

No wonder OP is pretty much helpless becouse this subject is quite hard. That is, the underlying principle is pretty classical F=ma but the ingeniuty is that he can use sophisticated mathematical analysis tools to generate a suitable tool to use when the problem is that we know the bounds and paths, yet not quite the forces.

Think about this: every restriction generates some kind of force. ? F. You now the direction but not the amount. Coupled pendula? Well the bars are at directions of those forces. A ball rolling in a bowl? The force is at direction of the surface normal. Try to remember the langrange equation becouse in examination you just dont have time. Then you should get a solution.
