Anons who studied physics at university, how are you doing now?

Also where are you from and what did you choose for your master(if you did it)? Why did you choose physics?

I'm at my first year in physics btw, started 2½ months ago, I'm in Italy, I chose this university because I want to understand how the things that the world is made of work and behave.

I used to say that I liked physics until I had to attend to these classes. Maybe I just have a pretty bad teacher but it just feels so boring. Also I have to mention that I am not sharing classes with physics majors the name of the class is physics for mathematics.

to add to this, started in September, did it to be a researcher. It hasn't been that long but my dreams are crushed. I feel to slow, I can't grasp anything with online class. One of my classmates already pulled out the program for suicidal tendencies and goddamn I think am gonna be next.

I graduated completely burned out a few years ago, now I'm employed in something totally unrelated to STEM. If you're not willing to go through graduate school (MSc, PhD) then don't bother as the degree will be worthless most of the time. Like you, I was also very curious about how things work and would spend most of my time reading about them, that mindset motivated me to go to university for physics as I also enjoyed mathematics a lot but once I got in I realized it was very different from what I had expected, most of the courses were very problem solving driven like retaining formulas and mathematical derivations and how they're applied. I would spend most, if not all, of my time solving practice problems from multiple textbooks, hundreds and hundreds of them, and from several authors too. Looking back now, it mostly felt like I was being prepared for some international olympiads competition than anything else. I don't know what it's like for you in your school, but my experience was very stressful and provided zero useful experience for the real world, especially employment wise, and there was no way around it as the grades were 100% based on the exams and these were like harder problem sets and don't even get me started on the time factor, so yeah, I had to spend countless hours studying everyday practicing for them so I'd be able to solve them faster as well. I don't see what the point was of it all, why was it important to grade me entirely based on my problem solving abilities when nowadays we have computers doing all of the work? This leads me to another thing, I just remembered that the entire programming curriculum consisted of introductory Fortran, instead of being way way more computer programming oriented. Scientists at CERN aren't scribbling down formulas with paper and pencil to analyze the data lol. The irony is that I have mostly forgotten everything I've learned from thousands of hours of "studying", basically it was a time waster.

mentioned, if you do not plan on staying 2-6 more years in academia so you can do research for your entire life, this degree is not for you. I am completely burned out, I will take my final for electrodynamics in three weeks and I have not opened the book once or seen any of the lectures, but I'm not worrying because I know my shitty university has made it almost impossible for students to fail now with covid.

I wish I did engineering, but in all honesty I still don't know what to do with my life.

By the way, I forgot to add that I also had lab classes for some courses like mechanics, electronics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics etc, which consisted of conducting experiments, gathering the data and writing reports which were also graded, but they weighed like 25% at most of the final grade and the remaining 75% were exams (ie the overwhelming problem solving stuff I mentioned). Lab classes were fun but the statistical handling of the data when writing the reports weren't as much, it wasn't hard, it was just too much manual labor, but maybe the weak programming aspect of the course was to blame here. Anyway, the bulk of my physics degree was math and physics problem solving.

I got a government job. I'm about to switch careers right now though, as I'm looking into programming in my spare time to work as a dev and hoping that piece of paper that I've got collecting dust will be useful for something even if it's just a certified reference for "good analytical and problem solving skills".

Oh, and it wasn't my intention to put anyone down, maybe I just had a bad experience, unmatched expectations or something.

I've been self teaching myself Python as I know this will greatly expand my options, would you say that this language is a good idea?

Not well. Helene kicked me out of school wrongfully before I could finish my PhD and the 10 year downtrend in my life since then shows no signs of an upcoming reversal. That's like Helene's thing she does: she causes lifelong irreparable grievous injuries and then says, "Fuck you nigger, what are you going to do about it?"

3rd year physics phd student. From the US. Went into undergrad doing engineering because of memes from parents and hs teachers. Absolutely hated it, grades were dropping, 0 motivation. Switched into physics halfway through (parents weren't too happy at first but there was literally nothing they could do to stop me, I was on a full ride scholarship at my state school. Now I'm on my way to getting a doctorate and they're all supportive again, go figure.)
Why did I choose physics? Because it's fun, ever since day 1 in high school physics class. It's definitely the math, but also the fact that the math actually means something real in the world. Also, I'm an autist who enjoys delving deep into a specific topic, so pursuing a phd was a natural path.

During my bachelors I had a major depression, so it took me quite a while.
Now I'm finishing my master's and thinking about trying my luck with a phd in computational fluid dynamics.
But working at a university seems to attract either fucking maniacs that work 24/7 or idiots who boast about their papers to undergrads and don't know actual shit. And I have the feeling that I'd become the latter because I'm just too fucking lazy and stupid.
Also 80% of work of a phd student/postdoc seems to be either babysitting idiots or university politics, filling out forms, battling over equipment and labs and all that shit.
