Why do people release groundbreaking research for free?

Every now and then I read about graduate students and PhDs coming up with some amazing algorithm which solves a problem.
What they do is publish some research papers about it and then get hired by some company so they can be paid peanuts.

What's wrong with them?
Something like that can be monetized immediately. All you have to do is sell it to institutions and businesses if you don't want to sell it to customers. And then you get rich. What's the point of being retarded and just publishing it without patenting it and then getting hired as a wageslave. Even if they give you 150k starting, that's still much less than what you'd make if you sold it as a product.
