Why is there such a stigma against suicide? Shouldn't people have a right to end their own life if they so choose? Especially the elderly. David Goodall lived to 104 and went to Switzerland for a physician-assisted suicide while listening to Beethoven. Seems a lot nicer than going out to a disease or dying unexpectedly in my sleep. Anyone should have the right to end their own lives, regardless of age.

There are two main reasons.

The first is religious dogmatism. Lets just disregard that one because it's bullshit.

The more important one is that a desire for suicide is almost always a result of mental illness. With this in mind, we can consider suicide as just another way a person can die as a result of illness. We try to prevent people from dying this way for the same reason we prevent people from dying of the flu or cancer. We make suicide illegal because it makes it much easier to prevent in a practical way.

I watched a documentary yesterday about people with cancer etc living at a care facility just waiting to die. And I'm thinking what the hell is wrong with these people allowing this shit. One guy said he was in pain and saw no point in continuing his life, why don't they just let him die painlessly.

If you have a terminal and/or untreatable serious illness, then euthaniasia ought to be allowed. In fact polls show majority support for this even in many conservative, religious countries. Legal euthanasia is one of those laws where there is no real argument against it.

However, allowing healthy people to just kill themselves at will is much more questionable. I am not totally opposed to the idea, but it is an ethical minefield.
