i watched this and later watched a few yt vids about how RBMK reactors work
They sound pretty based and safe overall, and cheap too

is it true you can make an RBMK reactor with unenriched uranium and why aren't we doing it

yes but RBMK is supposedly dirt cheap so the soviets used that tech a lot

and i read somewhere you could use UNENRICHED uranium (costs a lot to enrich it)

Any form of uranium is likely expensive as fuck, hazardous to deal with and a nightmare to storage. Its a very energetic but extremely shitty source of fuel that isn't worth exploring unless you have the proper means to do so.
Sustainable energies aren't a meme, the fact is photovoltaic panels exploit a source of energy that is near infinite compared to all our requirements. We should focus on increasing efficiency and mass production for cost reduction and maximise the consumption of solar energy. Any advanced civilization would harvest the energy of their star as efficiently as possible.

The problem with solar is the panels are very inefficient at this time. Additionally it can't be put everywhere and you still run into the issue of power distribution.

Relative to the cost of the plant, it's inspections, it's staffing, and it's maintainence, the cost of the uranium fuel is pretty wimpy. For example if you doubled the price of uranium, the resulting increase in $/kWH would be like $0.30.

There were plans to use unenriched uranium, but I don't think they were put in use. It usually worked with 1.8% enrichment (which is still much less than 5% in PWR).

You can passively extract it from seawater, supply is practically limitless and the processes which diffuse uranium from the crust into the oceans self-regulate into a steady state concentration. Storing it is easy, it's been political NIMBY nonsense and virtual signaling that's stood in the way. All US waste from the paste 75 years could fit in half a football stadium, and it isn't dangerously radioactive for more than several decades. Transport is a concern for nuclear power itself, as in you can't easily fill a "tank" with nuclear energy, you must convert it to electricity in batteries or convert it to hydrocarbon fuel cells (with a massive loss in efficiency). This holds true for all alternatives to fossil fuels however, and nuclear has the benefit of being by far the highest energy density power source.

it's cheap to have a builder just make a reactor, but all the "professionals" and their horrendous fees, that force themselves to be involved, in addition to the politicians, and existing fossil fuel energy #polies and the influence which state revenues from those taxes gets. all adds up meaning you're having to pay 10x 100x the real cost.

the only way nuclear or any new product / tech will be viable, is if you figure out a way to "disrupt" the meddlers, to bypass them completely or neutralise their positions of power.

all "new" businesses and industries face this problem, it's not about having a good idea or technology, there's an endless supply of those, the challenge is figuring out how to get it past all the shitheads.
