Hey all

What's the best way/resources to learn python in the context of doing physics research. For reference I know mathematica, R, and some very basic Java from back in highschool.

Just put something in to search like this:

"Python <function or task you want to do> example"

Here's a concrete example:

Isn't this just for symbolic manipulation? Python can do that.

Also MATLAB is a much better version of Python and is worth knowing for independent study or on the off chance you manage to work for a company that isn't poor

If you know that, learning python should take you a few hours maximum.
Just start doing whatever you want to do and look things up along the way.

MATLAB is the defacto standard in many places (it also beats python in many areas by quite a significant margin, except that it is proprietary garbage of course) and for things that actually aren't toy examples C/C++ or even Fortran are absolutely vital.

python alone is just a glue code.
numpy, numba, panda, scipy, sympy and co. is where kludge magic really happens.

Sure, but you do realize that numpy is written entirely in Cython and Python right? Scipy has some fortran, but most of it is still python.

Modern scientific libraries including scipy and sympy rely on high level abstract algorithms for performance. You can't write these in C++ anymore and have any hope in hell in outperforming code using APIs to the hyper optimized routines like those found in the scipy stack.

To give you a concrete example, suppose your algorithm requires a few sparse tensor products. You can spend 2 years writing C code and still not beat someone's afternoon Python script calling scikit-learn/TensorFlow or whatever.

just collect a ton of examples of the sort of code you need to write, train a deep neural network on them, and finally input your specific problem to the network and copy-paste the output into your editor of choice
