The recent Chinese doctor who actually did the procedure was AWOL. Not only that he only got a possitive confirmation from one out of six or maybe seven trials. And in that one it was preformed on twins where only one of those were actually gave the results he was looking for. This here. Using genetic screening on IVF embryos is already being done. Right now it is officially limited to screening for known genetic diseases, but there is no reason it couldn't be used for IQ or other traits, once their genetic bases become better understood.

There is no inherent need to allow suffering due to imperfect biological hardware. Even if your argument that some amount of suffering in life is required in order to build "character" and for people to "grow as people" then I'll posit that the environment that they will be born into will be more than happy to induce that suffering, regardless of their personal construction.

We should be giving every person who is born every opportunity to strive and succeed in whatever they choose to do, and allowing nature to limit them by taking away options as to what they could do is the exact wrong way to do that. Nobody should have to suffer failure because of circumstances outside of their control if those circumstances could be avoided easily due to a little diligence.

Speaking from partial ignorance, traits like height and especially intelligence are highly polygenic and so unless CRISPR or another technology is capable of editing hundreds or even thousands of genes there will only be minimal gains in this area. Does anyone know what the limits of CRISPR are? Is it safe to change thousands of an embryo's genes, or is that too dangerous for the child?
