>>10140202Because cats are never really domesticated. How house cats behave is how stray, and wild cats behave for the most part. If you have ever had a cat you may have noticed that, occasionally, for no apparent reason, they lose their shit and claw, bite, or otherwise attack you. This would be a huge problem if they were large enough to do any damage(see Seigfried and Roy), but since domestic cats are tiny most people just find it cute. Cats lack a pack mentality, and thus can never be 100% committed to their owners. They may like you, but if it came down to their survival, they would kill you if necessary. Dogs, on the other hand, are descendants of wolves who have strong pact bonds. Dogs have also been artificially selected by humans for thousands of years to be less aggressive, and more loyal. The pact mentality is what results in some dogs who will murder people who try to attack their owner, even at the cost of their own life. Large cats will never be a common pet, because every once in a great while, large cats will kill their owners when they forget to feed them. Not because they are angry, but because they are hungry and give zero fucks where their food comes from.
