In Greece and Rome where the circumcised phallus was seen as ridiculous, some Jews were stretching the remaining foreskin to look normal and cover the glans. Permitting them entry into the gymnasium, bathhouses, so on, without ridicule. The Jews were losing cultural identity and cohesion, so the Rabbis developed the method of using a sharpened thumbnail to tear the foreskin off the glans and cut off as much of it as possible. It was agreed that if a mother had lost 2 prior infants to circumcision, the 3rd could be spared the procedure and Yahweh aka El Siddai would be totally okay with it.
The Romans punished circumcising another person the same way they did castration, with death. The Jews were becoming an issue in the empire besides, and the Romans certainly understood cultural cohesion and trauma programming. In Greece it was seen as unaesthetic mutilation, which is unsurprising given that it was a common Athenian sentiment that every man should ideally attain and experience his body's full potential. so it was rejected in this culture and there was little if any uptake. Here too bodily integrity was required for certain rights.
The Spanish Inquisition was the only successful campaign to get rid of the Jews without killing them.
