See, the thing with mars is that it comes with an """atmosphere""", twice as much G force and has this crazy publicity of being a whole separate planet of insane distance that gets those european go-somewhere-stupidly-dangerous-and-rape-it juices flowing. The moon has a more pronounced microgravity environment, which makes things like not withering away harder, has absolutely no form of atmospheric protection (while being a magnet for impacts). Now the upside is that the moon is relatively a skip and a jaunt away and would make /sense/ to have there be some kind of constant human presence there to refuel rockets destined for all points further afield in our solar system, which until we increase our technology for human habitation in EXTREME environments, will be mars. Eventually we will get autonomous outposts in places which are able to "survive" away from earth and sustain economic activities (mining, tourism), but with how the current hype is, it feels like we will land people on the moon and start trying to fuck off to mars, which really feels like putting the cart before the horse.
