I agree with taking away merit admissions for public schools. Just encourages social divides.

They are also the most segregated city/area of America.

Actually doing the proposals they pretend to support (de-segregation) is never going to happen in NY.

There is evidence which suggests, very generally, that diversity of approach is more successful in problem solving than higher skill. Not only is this ethical, but it's also more pragmatic if the goal is to make your workforce more competitive globally.
