then theres this one. it sticks out. it looks very.. ugly, amateurish. i cant believe that someone with such constant quality in his work could make a dud like this.
any one else see it? am i crazy?

nothing about the painting makes sense, paint tacked on without purpose. if you look at the rouen cathedral series the technique is similar, except there he was actually going somewhere with it. these layers on layers that start to look like stucco are also rarely seen paintings in strong sunlight (outside of paintings made in his garden and studio).
and whats with the meaningless dark strokes in the sky? those are things less experienced painters sometimes do because they cant separate the values good enough. heres a confirmed fake, it has the same dirtyness, but all over.
and why is the paint around the signature different? and the ugly green splat in the tree line.
this painting alone is constantly bad in all aspects, no one who paints does this and then have the rest of them look good, maybe a few mistakes here and there.

not in this way, its not the skill that is lacking in those cases. i work through some less impressive stuff between my good paintings aswell, but its not like i accidentally start to paint like a child every now and then

ok, after looking a bit more, the weird space around the signature seems to be there on a few other of his paintings, like here. maybe he finished the plain air, signed it, and worked some more on it at the studio. but someone making a fake could easily reproduce that.
also i was maybe a bit off the mark with the stucco thing in strong sunlight, but the point still stands. the effect only happens if you work a lot on a painting, painting over dried paint. but why do that without going for any effect? and you would only do that if you thought it was going to be a good painting right, or at least working toward something?

and look at this! this is the same place, only that this one is miles better, the lighting makes sense here, and its lush.
so if this was the basis of a fake, where its overcast, then that would make sense that the fakes sunlight doesnt look right. it almost looks like there are some ambient shadows on them which would definitely not be noticeable in that light. and given the parallax between the two paintings its clear that he would be painting the subject quite near to him. that would probably make it so at least a little shadow behind the stacks show.

You literally havent seen his paintings that he destroyed, painted over, etc. How can you say they "wont be as bad" From any museum documentation about the painting you posted it is a real Monet.

That particular painting also differed in physical technique from most of his work, but it most likely indicates not a fake, but an artistic experiment. He laid the paint on thick (a technique called impasto) to give it an intense impression of depth- Which only comes through when viewed in person from different angles, not in a photograph, hence why it looks amateurish here. I do agree that it looks like shit in a photo next to his other work, though.
