I'm retarded, I just realized I can get mid tones and bounce lights through darken and lighten layer modes to avoid mixing them up unintentionally when using really big brushes

i do this when working on big pieces or complicated pieces but when i'm just doing a single character i do things the traditional way because i found myself a couple years ago suddenly unable to draw with a pencil and it freaked me the fuck out
