If you painted something too light or too dark, you just move the new value on a slider, and it’s done, as long the gradient is internally consistent, it’s easy to fix anything, and since you can just use multiple maps with masks, you don’t even need to keep the painting consistent, just individual gradients, if one arm is wrong, you just make a new map for that arm.
In fact, painting everything in the whole range regardless of local value makes it extremely easy to map accurate lighting since you can just plop your accents, average values and halftone at precise points and not have to plan literally anything except masks and surface material ahead of time.
