I don't really get the association between taking this sort of shortcuts and what you implied him lacking in technical skills, but Yoshikadu had long demonstrated to be excellent draftsman and great at illustrating dynamic anatomy as well as action scenes.
generally, after you enter a methodological mode of working, you do encounter some bottle neck in terms of visualization, generally your best version of something is on your 2nd or 3rd draft. generally reference in this way take a lot of guess work out of what you are visualize if its not a particularly important scene. i personally do distinguish this type of tracing from ones that were done by someone like Craig Land, for example, but I can understand how some people think this is creatively bankrupt on it face, but the distinction is too minuet to be useful for the level of discourse we typically held.
I thought this is an interesting approach because if I recall correct, that's actually a photo he has taken from using anatomy figures and an real life grid setup. I don't know how useful this workflow is for him but I just thought he was experimenting.
