KtD isn't a bad place to start, but I would recommend trying to copy drawings with simple linework first, like cartoons. The reasoning is that, unlike a photograph or IRL, where you need to interpret shapes of color and value into lines (which is a skill in and of itself), a line drawing is already well defined and simple to interpret, and any errors you make in copying are easily spotted and corrected. See the upside down drawing exercise in Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain. DotRSotB is another good place to start. While Betty Edwards' book is full of ramblings of dubious scientific veracity, the exercises are good and she has taught people how to draw what they see accurately. The "left brain vs. right brain" stuff may not be literally true, but it is a good metaphor for learning how to think like a visual artist.
