If you like doing abstract painting, but you are worried about the negative things people may say, then it might be a cognitive dissonance issue. As in, if you make being an artist a part of your identity, it will hurt a lot if someone says you are not an artist. I would consider abstract art to be art, but if you really want to be "invincible", you could just not think of yourself as an artist, and your art as not being art, but something else.
