Your technique is good enough, but you'll need to work on creativity and coming up with interesting concepts that you can represent with good technique. This is not skill vs creativity - you'll want both. Another thing that can hurt first-time applicants is the time constraints and panicking - definitely try making some pieces with a strict time limit, with a ticking clock looming over you. Ask your teacher to put pressure on you, or make a bet with a friend to up the stakes.
