Your question is inherently flawed, as you're implying that straightforward and appealing is created without knowledge of fundementals or art theory. This is wrong. Art theory was created over many centuries by many intelligent people picking apart what made an an image "straightforward and appealing" to a common audience member. They are based around what people find appealing, not the other way around.
