You're probably seeing in 2D. It takes some time, but soon those circles will be enough for you as a base for placing the more detailed features around.

You're right. Now you understand where the frustration with Loomis and art books in general comes from. They don't actually give you a concrete method for drawing, they just give you some suggestions, and you have to fill in a lot of the blanks yourself. Don't be afraid to take the ideas from the book and play around with them though.

This is why running those construction lines over the balls are so important. It's to rewire your brain to think 3 dimensionally. Its very important to actually draw it, instead of trying to visualize the construction of what you're drawing.

I think as an absolute beginner you should just focus on drawing/copying stuff you like and do it a lot (not on autopilot of course, focus properly on drawing and don't multitask).Pick parts you really struggle with and find references/tutorials for it so you can get better at it, then repeat but with a different part.
My experience is that beginners usually struggle with learning from books because they lack the experience for putting the knowledge to practice.
But if I had to recommend a book that would be Keys to drawing (or that course in the video thread I think it's called Art and science of drawing by Brent Eviston)
