Does lighting have to be "consistent"? Maybe it's because I dont fully understand lighting, but there's so many drawings I see where the lighting looks almost arbitrarily placed, or looks like it comes from 10 different sources while still casting shadows.

No. Nobody (who matters) will care if you light a figure for appeal instead of realism.

You can say that just about any element in art.

Of course, understanding appeal and making it look good require some level of understanding what it exactly looks like, it goes for rendering and anatomy too etc. You need to know nature and reality before abstraction and simplification..

Congrats, you're starting to see what's a bad drawing. A little more time and you'll get what makes good ones good.

You don’t need to ray-trace, but this. Most posing software also allows for lighting sources for shadows.

the thing is it can't really look good unless it has correct lighting, since light is the key element that is creating the visible form. If you think Op or any such similar doodles look good then it probably means you're beg since the artist is throwing around dozens of light sources trying to make it look good

You need consistence to show the planes of the forms
but otherwise you can do whatever, what's stopping you from having multiple light sources off screen that don't make sense? nothing
/beg/ are too used to one key light/one reflected diffuse light and one rim light

All true. However even the exact same scene with can look much better with "unrealistic" treatments such as value grouping.

less light sources = easier to not fuck up abysmally
add in different colors for each different light source and you better have a really good understanding of light physics to pull it off
also, keep in mind bounce light exists, so the 10 different light sources you're seeing might be something like 1-3 at most

this. every photographer or cinematographer worth a dime knows you use extra lights to get better results. on the other hand, just throwing lights in the scene and expecting shit to look good is retarded. you're better of with natural light until you know what the fuck you're doing.

You're confusing "consistent" with "simple" or "natural." The real world is full of multiple light sources, and in photography and film light is constantly being "faked" with artificial lights and reflectors for the sake of better composition or clarity in form. Artists do the same thing.
