In general, you just need some decent paper, pencils, an eraser and a ballpoint pen.
I like the Canson XL Drawing seriews sketchbooks for sketching. But in truth, any 70lb paper with a bit of texture will do well for most drawing needs. Its good to shop around and get what you feel suits your needs.
For pencils, a "number 2" or 2H will work for most anything, but if you want to get some of those sick, dark shadows you see in those graphite portraits try those "sketching pencils set"s they sell on Amazon. They'll look something like pick related, with tons of different pencils with darker and softer lead.
They're all of similar quality and should only run you about $6 to $14 dollars. Dont pay more than that, you wont get a good return on your money. People swear by Staedler Lumograph, but I've been using Dick Blick pencils and some Chinese offbrand set called Mincho and theyre great.
For pens, use Bic ballpoint pens. Seriously. Theyre the best. And theyre super fucking cheap.
As for erasers? I've come to love the MONO erasers by Tombow. Theyre Japanese, but they work really well on graphite and pretty much everything else. Even colored pencil. No weeb. Worth the money.
