The brushes are simple hard liners, the textured look is likely from using layer masks on a textured image.
>Get texture image and add as a layer (wrench symbol top left, insert a photo)
>tap the thumbnail of it in the layers menu, probably called layer 1
>mask
>tap thumbnail of layer mask, invert

Now when you draw on this layer in white it will reveal the photo giving you textured fills. Pic related is a comic book one. Can do this with any texture

Never used notes for drawing, but Vizref can crop and resize your references and it can store animated GIFS. Also you can create seperate "projects" which can hold specific collages for different pieces your working on.

If you need a collage of reference images, it might be just as quick/convenient to throw together a collage in an app you already have (quick and easy enough to do in Procreate or ArtStudio Pro), export it to Photos, then import it into the native reference image window. I think that would cover most people's needs.

That said, VizRef does have some nice features and it's inexpensive. It looks like it would be nice in slide-over mode.

There are no other apps where it as convenient as Vizref.

Like I said earlier, its amazing and there's really nothing else like it for the Ipad.

Honestly it’s probably the price that’s keeping it hidden away if anyone has it. It’s both on if no one who does these brush shares has even bought it and/or they’re keeping it as some high ticket item.
$50 is a lot for a pack like that, and their sale codes only ever cut like 10 bucks off.

I think the most popular option for Windows PCs is an app called Duet. It's $10, but an additional $30 a year if you want features like pressure sensitivity. No idea how well it works, as I've never used it, nor any of the competitors.

anon, there were cheap wacom emr windows tablets years before procreate, I had several that I used for painting in photoshop and csp (then manga studio)
tattooists also aren’t nomads, they work from studios, so I don’t see how it took procreate to have them suddenly migrate to digital

Notes is nothing like vizref and pureref is for PC only. Are you retarded?

No other app can store animated gives or crop and resize images like vizref and no other app can save seperste collages of references. Stop being autistic about this. If you don't want to use the app then no one is forcing you to, buy don't invent shit just as an excuse to not use a good tool for arbitrary reasons.

I've just moved over to Procreate from SAI, Does anyone know if theres a similar way to expand selections like how I could with SAI? For the most part it seems like I'm just stuck with what I lasso and can't expand or decrease the range of what I've selected but I could be missing an option somewhere

I tried to figure out how to create a Baidu account a while back because the Chinese have some pretty nice piracy forums, but everything is hosted on that Baidu cloud shit. It's pretty intuitive to me, but I've been using Photoshop for 15 years, so that might have something to do with it. As for Procreate, I'll admit that in many ways they've nailed the simple-and-easy-to-use UI aspect. I imagine that's one reason it's so popular. Someone who's never used a digital drawing/painting program in their life can start using Procreate relatively quickly.

There was an update a few days ago, I doubt it’s actually gone.
Speaking of, I sent the dev an email pointing out some shortcomings of the app and what might make it more appealing to both casual and power users, but I never got a reply.
Procreate, I’d send bugs, have them confirm they reproduced the bugs, then they’d do nothing about it ever.
Artstudio is the only case where the dev himself actually cares what users think.

it’s actually pretty nice
the drawing and watercolor modes seem identical, but with different choice of canvas, while oil mode allows you to use the oil toolset, but not the watercolor toolset
the oils seem pretty much like a streamlined paintstorm engine, and are kinda meh imo
the drawing and watercolor modes are pretty nice
the drawing tools are very nice, the ballpoints are 10/10, the colors are very nice and vivid, blending does very little to desaturate the colors, giving you very bright and colorful pictures
haven’t bought the memebox tools, but I might get the pens if I end up using the app a lot
hopefully they add the option to just export the file like a normal app, otherwise maybe screenshotting can be good enough to post casually or import to another app to develop fully

granted, I only used a single layer and I have no clue what resolution the canvas is
also, it’s not realistic in the context of the media at all, I’d say art set 4 has a bigger focus on realism, but this is a much smoother and more polished app all around
some tools are very nice and real-feeling, like the ballpoint pens that I mentioned, which are perfect, but they don’t interact with each other realistically at all
like the markers will straight up blend or overwrite the pen, and don’t build up their own pigment, but feel very nice if you think of them as “markers” rather than real markers
compare that to art set 4 where using a ball point ben will even carve into different media
on the other hand, this app is very polished, while art set 4 doesn’t even let you disable finger painting, so you end up with a bunch of dots and lines from your palm everywhere

Just realized artstudio has the equivalent of photoshop’s content aware filling, so you can transform an already painted area and it will fill it in adequately enough so you can just overpaint it a bit instead of doing the whole thing, pretty neat

The problem with iOS apps is that people expect to pay once and get free updates forever, and that's just not a sustainable business model for most developers. But, lesser known apps with smaller numbers of users and not much promotion need a way to survive, and the "buy once and receive free updates forever" business model won't enable a developer to keep working on the app in the long run.

Bro, the 4 color process was used for comic books (and other printed media) through the 80s and into the early 90s when computer based coloring took over. It's a look that's desired today largely out of 70s and 80s nostalgia.

Fun fact: the English release of Akira by Epic Comics that began being published in 1988 was the first comic book to be completely digitally colored.

Worked in several studios.rarely do studio s have a setup with tablets and computers. If you're in a super pro shop then maybe you'll have a big lightbox in the back for paper drawings but I've never heard of shops having tablets. When you're hired it's like a barbershop. You get a chair and you pay your cut of the finished tattoo to the front desk. So whatever you do to fulfill your clients needs is up to you. I always had my own supplies, paper, pens etc for drawing out pieces but if I had an ipad back then it would've been a godsend.

When I said windows EMR tablets, I meant tablet computers running windows and wacom’s emr technology for drawing. You could get an avn8 for under $300 in 2014, and I painted on 25k pixel canvases in photoshop on it, so I’m sure it could handle tattoos.

Eh, things like retrosupply are a niche thing. They push that mid century look because it can be branded easily, I’d assume. They don’t have to come up with anything new either to push it.
I will say though if ya like texturing your work to make it look crusty or to just add something to it to mock a traditional look, they’re a plus with some of their texture brushes. The Mega has most of what is nice, but also look for Dead Subtle and Fast Grit- they’re floating around free somewhere.

Colorlab seems nice because they have texture brushes that I don’t believe are in other packages they offer. That and since the half tones are layered as brushes, you can do things with it ya can’t easily do with Debaser if halftones are your shtick. Plus they have paper backgrounds included there- those are always nice to find actual good ones. But I’d say the main focus of it is the halftones.

It honestly just depends on what you’re going for with your work.
