Help with pic related? It's a WIP that's been pissing me off for the past few weeks. I can't get the contrast or saturation right with any of the color study. Everything just looks like low contrast shit and it's frustrating the living hell out of me. What colors can I blend in with this to make it look better?

well for example draw darker and harder shadows, draw bright highlights on the metallic gun. there's a million ways to increase contrast. you can even paint a light source coming from the background and draw rimlights on the character and weapon. your picture has alright readability from the thumbnail which is good if that matters to you

You;re right about the shadows, but should it be warmer and more saturated to bring out the colors? Or more cooler toned to add to the edgy feel? I genuinely can't tell but I feel like either way I won't be satisfied with this. I don't know. It's just one of those pieces I guess.

Cool light makes warm shadows and vice versa. Be consistent with this and vary hue rather than using darker value of same color to shade.

that shading style IMO doesnt work with that animation style. Try lighter shadows that dont fade as much, then try it with shadows that have no fade

I would say go bolder and more graphic with your shadow shapes to match the more cartoony style. Then check greyscale and threshold in the navigator to make sure you have a clear read. once you do that just play around with color adjustment layers till you have something you like!
