After lurking for sometime now, I’ve come to terms with the fact that the only real way of improving my artistic skill is to take a class on fundamentals, and learn the rules before breaking them. But as soon as I’ve learned the rules, they’re gonna be fucking shattered

Training fundies and creating works don't have to be mutually exclusive, lest you lose yourself in process of attaining mechanical skill

with this I meant that you're better off studying 1 specific thing and really taking your time to absorb it throughout the day by incorporating it into a piece of work (like learning face proportions and than drawing portraits for a day) instead of just mass consuming fundamentals and losing a lot of information in progress

I'm just starting out and came to the same conclusion, except fuck taking a class. there are plenty of resources out there that will go over the fundamentals. I'm starting Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain right now.

I really wanted to start off with digital art too, but I realized I was going to be selling myself short if I needed to rely on a computer to make something satisfying.
