Now if David was made by some guy today and he told you that this sculpture depicts the biblical David, about to face off with the giant Goliath, would you keep shitting bricks? He's supposed to be afraid. Does he look like anything other than low key pissed off? It took researchers to look at the sculpture from unnatural angles and analyze its anatomical details in order to detect the emotions of fear and excitement. Of course the caveat is that Italians at the time had just invented "cool" and this feeling is exuded by both David and Mona Lisa. But I'm just saying -- David doesn't look like David. He doesn't look like a guy who's about to face off a giant in a battle to death. Sure, it looks cool, it's a nice sculpture. But it's boring. David isn't supposed to be cool, he's supposed to be ready for battle. This sculpture would be met with a round of yawns today.
