You didn't improve a ton because you didn't actually tackle your issues, didn't do what you were suppose to, didn't get critiques at least not from anyone else that's serious about art, and now you got a critique you finally know what to work on and can improve. If you show people your drawings from reference people can tell you what you did wrong, you can fix those mistakes and then you'll improve, I have no doubt in my mind you can't draw well from observation. I think the moral of the story is you didn't improve because you didn't get critiques, or you didn't listen to them, or you didn't tackle your issues.
