NES games aren't really known for having appealing color palettes (of course appealing is subjective). I'm not a huge fan of SK's colors, but they're a cut above a lot of the amateur stuff out there.
SKII, on the other hand, has a fantastic palette, if you're on board with the charming & colorful style.
But yea, color is HUGE, and pixel artists tend to value it a lot.
