>>3988698>Do manga still have to work around printing technology?Printing hasn't changed. B/W printing is still one ink (black) on paper. Color printing is just 4 inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) or more on paper. They're all based on very tiny dots of ink, creating the illusion of washes and gradients.
You don't have to do everything in crisp black and white, just like you don't have to use fonts. It's just the results would not meet the expectations of most of the audience.
>I didn't consider that it was a translation and that this artist was specifically about mangaEven outside of a manga context, she's still absolutely right because chicken scratching isn't just a line quality issue, it's a design issue. I've harped on this many times, and it's infuriating that beginners look at texture work and claim "see, small strokes are okay!" Chicken scratch kills sketches and designs. Even impressionist artists often start with a well drawn underpainting that uses long strokes to create good shapes.
None of these beginners are designer-level artists. They don't understand what the job entails.
