It's better to use it for practice as oppose to reference. When working with art, speed is key and using 3d as a crutch are going to make you slow as a snail. clients won't like that

I only use Sketchup for complex things that I have to repeat accurately in comics: house interiors, vehicles etc. simply because it would be a shitton of work to measure everything and double check the scale of things.

At first 3D software is faster (for beginners) but once you reach a certain point of being able to draw without it, it takes too long to set up the model and it's faster to just draw without it.

it can be useful, but a lot of renders have screwy focal lengths, which can off the proportions when drawn in 2D, there is also 3D model stiffness to take into account, which again is more visible when drawn.

This phrase is almost never used correctly. Vilppu is referring to art fundamentals. He's saying that the fundamentals of art are not rules intended to limit you, they're tools intended to give you more artistic power and freedom. 3d reference is cool as long as you have what it takes to make something out of it. The only question is by the time you could have made a whole 3d model you could have made an indication of one with basic constructions, and if you can't do basic constructions why the hell are you even bothering with something like that? Bottom line is it's a possible tool but it's a medium like any other and it had limits to its usefulness

for example the basic contours and the colors one by one

this depends on how much you could place your projector at different angles with the necessary corrections

Then learn 3d+photobashing

Holy shit it speeds up fucking everything. Once you have like a kitbash library built up, you can do almost anything. Also do NOT be afraid to photobash or use 3d. Seriously. Unless you have good economy of line, or excellent brush capability, 3d blockouts and photobashing will help achieve a level of professional work without grinding out every small little detail.
