Also, there's likely a biais in your perception of religion: people want to hear about child raping priest, and media are quite pleased to comply.
On the other hand, while we *never* heard of them, and as they are barely noticeable to regular people, in my country, the only people that many times a week feed/check on the homeless, manage cheap reselling merchandise checkpoints for poor people, are Christians & Muslims.
And it's not just a bunch of old people who have nothing better to do. Some young people do choose to spend time and money they could spend for themselves, by helping others instead.
Also, while I'm a theist, I know that religions are in great part the products of men. Not flawless, but they do have qualities, although a proper and rigorous appreciation requires quite some deep thinking.
