just use three tones that you preselect
white, black, and maybe a 40% gray
mid-tone is the average distance from the camera, the other two tones are light and dark, those are the ones you paint, do a fill for the mid-tone
light is closest to camera
dark is furthest
if you want something to have depth, then make it recede from the camera into darkness, raise things with light tones but use sparingly so you can express specularity
