We wanted to see the Emperor explored because there was so much to his mystery, his character on it's own was so compelling and smooth and intelligent, and just had such downright fun being evil that you knew more of him would be interesting even if you knew he was doomed. He turned the strongest jedi, he wiped out all of the most powerful order of laser sword wielding badasses, he drove Yoda and Obi-wan into hiding just so they would one day have the slightest chance of victory. That's damn impressive.
If Luke had been looking for a way to beat him, that would be pretty interesting. Someone so powerful even the savior of the world couldn't beat. But as it stands? He was really corny, his CGI was pretty bad in spots, and he went out without doing a single impressive thing. What's there to look forward to?
We wanted to see the Emperor in his prime because even aged and crinkled he was so damn impressive. This guy isn't fit to be his Grima Wormtounge.
