A lot of people are shitting on john k and rightfully so, and ren and stimpy. But dont let them revise history. Shows like ren and stimpy were groundbreaking for the time and really where the break away from 80's animation into 90's animation culturally speaking.

And it was shows like ren and stimpy being successful which probably led to the business fucks realizing there is a market for adult cartoons which led to lots of adult humor cartoons being green lit in the 90's and 2000's

Why isn't MM remembered more than R&S despite actually being the first? Shouldn't Ralph Bakshi more logically be remembered for revitalizing cartoons on TV?

He took Godard away to be kept as his personal robot slave so he can build an army of them to go after me next. Now is my duty to avenge my family and destroy that pink motherfucker once and for all.

- some other third original Nicktoon would have taken its place (perhaps My Dog Zero) with the same crew or a similar crew, achieving similar success

Probably a minimal impact, mostly resulting in fewer gross-out shows. The Simpsons had already started airing before Ren & Stimpy, as did Tiny Toon Adventures. Disney was in full stride with DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, and TaleSpin. Rugrats and Doug were in development at the same time as Ren & Stimpy and premiered the same day, and Batman TAS hit the airwaves a year later but owes it's shot to the success of the 1989 Batman movie.

The idea that Ren & Stimpy was some sort of watershed moment for television animation is pure nonsense perpetuated by John K and his cult of personality.

Not much.

The simpsons were an influence on Beavis and Butt-head and south park, both shows would had existed without ren and stimpy. A case can be made about cartoon cartoons, but while some stories were in fact infuences by red & stimpy at the end of the day only COW & CHICKEN was sucessfull, Dexter,Johnny Bravo and powerpuff girls had nothing to do with it and Family guy was 100% simpsons and Flintstones.

Ren & stimpy wasnt that influential, someone compared them to iron maiden in this board and i think he was right.

Rocko's Modern Life was produced by Games Animation, so the circumstances leading to Rocko never would have happened. Stephen Hillenburg got his start on Rocko, so maybe he would never get to make Spongebob.

John K's main contribution to animation was in technical differences.
80s: different director for the voice actors, the music, the animation...
R&S: one director for all aspects of the cartoon, like a feature film
80s: writers make scripts, animators draw what the writers write
R&S: animators make scripts, and the scripts change according to what works best as a drawing
80s: no layouts (like a director of photography)
R&S: layouts is the main storytelling stage
80s: no timing (the animator draws the time/speed of the motion with no reference from the director)
R&S: timing (pic related, the best yawn in animation history - watch the timing on that motherfucker)

John K fought (probably literally using his fists) to get these things in cartoons and now most of them are taken for granted, but they're essential for the artistic contribution of the crew to the final product.

He's a scumbag, but that doesn't mean everything he did is meaningless or bad.

That along side Gummi Bears came out of TMS, they're the ones to thank for fixing the industry, Ren and Stumpy caused a shift that made everyone switch to Korea, if there was no Ren and Stimpy cartoons will still be done in Japan and that meens Laura and Kana would of been used as intended (Simpsons and Tiny Toons had a baby) rather then being sabotaged with hamsters.

Cartoons would be largely made by companies attempting to mine value from popular properties like comics and toys, mostly commissioned by executives with less focus on the creators. Shows like EEnE wouldn't exist because boarders would have to have a much stricter adherence to the ideas of people who weren't cartoonist.

Spumco and other animators from that time brought back creator-driven cartoons, and Ren and Stimpy was one of the biggest ans earliest successes of that revival.

Contrarians or revisionist can pretend Ren and Stimpy was bad or unimportant, but the facts are there.

It's not about the style of the show. It's about the creators getting to push their own vision to the screen, and having more control over that. Even if thwy had different humor, styles, or subject matter, being creator-driven was something John K was hugely influential to.

Reminder Tiny Toons was made largely by Might Mouse Alumnus who'd worked under John K and used his production system and emphasis on in house production of scene layouts, many artist from Tiny Toons would even later come to work for Ren amd Stimpy. You quite literally cannot remove John K from the equation

But here's the thing, TMS edited the scripts and boards all the time, they even did secondary and background character designs, they even had their own color key person (Tomoko Yamamoto), when Timm blocked TMS from editing scripts they did so in their other shows.

Tiny Toons is not contract work, that will be Inuyasha (Sunrise), Blood-C (Clamp/IG), FMA:Brotherhood and Aikatsu (also Sunrise, later BN Pictures), not to mention the contract work they got from Ghibli over the years.

TMS did their own layouts as thats done by the animation director (Toshihiko Masuda, Kenji Hachizaki, Hisao Yokobori, ect), I'm sorry, please stop talking.

That didn't last long. Animaniacs only did in-house layout for Season 1 AKOM episodes, everything else was outsourced. It should be clarified though that that doesn't mean there weren't layout artists, they were just outsourced to the same companies that did the animation.

Regardless, in-house layout is not something that John K influenced much - it's all back to being outsourced now, with the exception of The Simpsons (which also predates Ren and Stimpy).

R&S brought back the old cinematic cartoon vibe of something made for both adults and children, and of something zany not safe, and that's certainly influenced a lot of cable cartoons since the 90s. But I also think the time had come, and if not this someone else would have. College students are the ones who really popularized it, and they had strong nostalgia for the fun Saturday morning cartoons of their youth that had been replaced by pablum. They'd pack college theaters just to watch old Bugs Bunny shorts. If people already in the industry hadn't made something to feed this demand, some of those students absolutely would have made something for themselves.

R&S showed that cartoons based on character and story could make money, that they didn't have to be moralizing shit for kids or ads for toys. That opened a lot of producers' wallets for the cartoon revival. But if the other stuff was going to happen anyway, then so would this.

R&S did have a lot of influence on later cartoons, for better or worse, but you can't say "but for R&S..." because the time was ripe, there was something in the air. R&S is just the one that wound up doing it.

That was a Wang episode not a TMS episode, non-TMS episodes were always boarded and keyed in the States, it's why Akom was tolerable on Tiny Toons, The Simpsons and Animaniacs but suffering on Batman, G.I. Joe and Transformers as Akom did their own keys on those shows.

Even without Ren & Stimpy, you still have The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse.

John K definitely deserves credit for saving Western animation but it would have happened without him. Because of Ren & Stimpy, there's more of an appreciation today of Bob Clampett - which is really important because of the efforts of Chuck Jones to remove his legacy from history. Chuck Jones hates Bob Clampett. However, Chuck Jones was always complaining about someone when he was alive.

The idea is that Clampett was featured in a documentary in the '70s where he took most of the credit for the success of the Looney Tunes style. (Bugs Bunny: Superstar)

This angered Chuck Jones so much that he omitted Bob Clampett when discussing the history of the Looney Tunes in his own films, biographies and interviews. There's a scene in the Chuck Jones directed film, The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, where Bugs mentions various Looney Tunes directors and does not mention Clampett.

However, John K (after spending much time with animators from that era) suggested that this feud was due to professional jealously as Clampett's cartoons were more successful and Leon Schlesinger forced Chuck Jones to make more comedic shorts in this fashion rather than Disney-esque (like the Chuck Jones shorts about Sniffles the mouse)

Whether you believe that anecdote is true or not - Chuck Jones was a pretty petulant director and I would believe the feud was just down to professional jealously whether he was confronted or not. Jones says that his version of Daffy Duck is based on Leon Schlesinger but it feels closer to how Chuck Jones actually behaved.

I do see where you're going (I think).

A quick look at a lot of his work can tell you a lot of what kind of person John K is but also his hangups.

He clearly has some kind of disorder, be bipolar as its been said or something else, and its super obvious he has severe Daddy Issues which he tries to cop with by thinking of them as comedy.

He has this vision of machismo and "King of the house" that probably comes from his childhood. I dunno if liking em young has anything to do with dear Daddy K. but who knows.

Like he does with his hang ups he probably put on the facade it was love when really he wanted to dip his dick wet. Some people with mental problems do have that disconnect.

If I had the power to peer into his mind I would totally take a gander at his daddy issues. They are so blatant in so many of his works, specially given how much he's been trying to push George Liquor.

A lot of the men of the house/fathers in R&S and most of his work are always the same; A twisted version of the whole nuclear family where the man was the law and everyone did what he said.

Fathers who are super stern, almsot militarly so and have a short temper, which John K. acts as its funny and charming. The guy has some serious hang-ups trying to cope with his shitty childhood, trying to delude it by making it appear "funny"

It's amost fascinating.

He did answer fanmail from guys as well. I had a friend who was trying to be an animator. He got detailed replies from John K. In fact, he said that's a big part of why John K was still a respected figure in animation. He spent a lot of time talking to and helping people who wanted to be animators.

I've seen a different guy online talking about how he wrote fanmail to John K, had a long correspondence with him basically worshiped the man, then met him at a con and encountered a hateful dead eyed man who could only focus on all the ways he'd been wronged.

The more of these letters you post, the more I'm convinced this guy was completely in his right mind and any story of "bipolar disorder" his lawyer tried to pull means it was a very, very mild diagnosis that at most made him very stressful to work with in a high-pressure studio environment, but every other terrible action was his own that he was aware of.

My letter is from before season 2 of Ren & Stimpy aired.

John K would regularly come to online chatrooms and give interviews to fans.

He gave out his e-mail address to random fans on the internet.

He could be a cool guy when he wanted to. But obviously he has a bad side. "Bad" probably doesn't begin to describe it.
