The first episode wasn't miserable. It was mostly a "back to the status quo" episode full of action meant to drum up excitement with the dynamic change of Jerry is now free from the family (despite being the voice that previously opposed Rick). I think my realization that Season 3 was cancer came around the time of Pickle Rick which was the third episode in iirc? Before that I just thought it was drab and boring compared to season 1 and Roiland's other stuff, setting a new standard for the probably long lifespan of the show.
