It was its biggest sin. A movie about a Mariachi singing modern day pop was a terrible idea. That was definitely a higher up decision and I wouldn't be surprised that they are hitting themselves on the face after seeing Coco's success.

I’m just watching this movie now after told me how good it was and how it was better than Coco. The pop music in particular disappoints me, but in general it’s really not as good as Coco. Maybe that’s just me though, but it felt much more pop culture centric where Disney seemed to create something more emotionally grounded and that’s my preference.

I think what people prefer from the Book of Life was the art style, Jorge R. Gutiérrez is fucking great, and it translated neatly into 3D thanks to the use of puppets. Coco looks great but doesn't look that well compared to the Book of life. Then again, it's subjective.
