The artists got use to doing certain shticks, and these tended to be pretty fun for the audiences of the time, so the artist kept doing them. This works for about a decade or so, if they’re lucky, but eventually, they’ve just flat out told every joke that they can with the setting and the characters. From the point on, it’s just repetition of the same jokes ad infinitum.
The characters might change superficially over time, picking up new tech, or commenting on new trends, but the comic itself never really changes.
I sincerely doubt newspaper comic stripes will last till the end of our generations life time.
