most people under their mid 20s don't like to pay money for stuff. not even movies. they'll just watch youtube videos they don't have to pay for. people past their mid 20s paying for physical printed works are most of the ones that would keep comics financially alive. the only way to get large numbers of people younger than their mid 20s interested in comics is to put narrated/voice acted videos of comic book panels on youtube, facebook, or a tv on demand service for free or as part of their general cable, streaming, and/or internet package available at the same place as conventional tv shows and movies.

Anyways, it's a distribution issue with Diamond.
There's also the issues with decompression and the stigma that the only western comics are big 2 cape.
Comics that come out as graphic novels in actual bookstores do fine.
The traditional LCS, floppy model is stagnant

Because it's the wrong demographic. Older readers are the ones that buy the most comics but you need to get people at a young age and plant the seeds. The lack of actually good cartoon shows is a problem. You got Justice League Action and that's it. Otherwise you get the shit that Marvel has been churning out for several years.

I think DC doing YA books is a good idea.

He is likely wrong. Comics likely drifted towards focusing a lot on people with super powers and magic powers due to other things not being deemed interesting enough for people to read when they could easily watch tv shows and movies. Something similar seems to be happening with the modern movie industry. The proportion of movies that large numbers of people are seeing in the USA that are non-action oriented blockbuster movies has been declining.

Monthly issues being a pain in the ass to keep up with and the price of them eventually piling up. Webcomics are free and a lot of the time more entertaining because of more variety and the ones you like don't get tied up in some shit from another comic.

One solution I've heard thrown around is to get comics out of shops and back on newsstands in grocery stores/toy stores/etc. This would help relive the stigma and intimidation most people feel when thinking about going into a comic shop. I think you'd be surprised how many people out there want to read comics but have no fucking idea where to start. My current girlfriend was always interested in comics but was too nervous/weirded out to go to her LCS until we met and now she reads comic pretty regularly with. I know that's anecdotal evidence but it's something to think about.

Of course, it's far too late for any of this. the reality of the matter is, comics are a species that isn't extinct yet but is on an unstoppable path to extinction. The main market for most comics is getting older and older, they aren't retaining any of the younger demographics at all. I think it's a realistic possibility that in 10-20 years the revenue generated from imported/officially licensed manga will actually be higher than the revenue generated from American comic books. It's just too niche of a genre to survive.

Newsstands are how I got into comics. It just wouldn't have happened if I had to go into an actual comic shop. I was traveling cross country by bus, and impulse bought a bunch. It turned into a thing where every stop I'd hit the newsstand. By the time I reached my destination any extra space in my suitcase was stuffed full of comic books.

Because comics are not marketed to anyone other than people already buying comics. I have never seen a poster, billboard, or any kind of ad outside the context of comic shops, comics, comic websites, so I'm not that surprised. I've seen ads for books in the cinema, but never a comic even though all those characters actually show up in films

Some of this already exists and most of it is geared for very young kids. I buy some of these by Capstone because they are well made (hard covers) so great for people who are past the slim readers but not for someone older than 5th grade or possibly even younger.

The YA books I've read are very YA; there are three Lois Lane books where Clark has powers but they are mostly Lois based books. Otherwise, things like what you are talking about (and then there are also YA versions that aren't the movie, but for example BvS had a tie-in young adult book). They are all OK, nothing is horrible, nothing is fantastic.

Not that anon but you must have failed basic math, not to mention economics. Inflation has not increased in the way you think, the graph clearly shows a 25% increase from 2011 to 2016. Inflation isn't 5% per year and isn't cumulative that way such that the increase would be represented solely by inflation. In addition, these charts don't even take into account bookstores (e.g. non-Diamond, much less digital downloads).

As for how long you have, it really depends on how some of the bigger actors manage themselves in the next few years. Marvel Comics at least seems to be trying to put its years of horrible managment and editorial policies behind them.
But then you also have stuff like IDW seeing a 91% decrease of their yearly income, so...
I'd say they could get a clue from frog&waffle comics and try to actually offer products of better quality, even in terms of format. Ditch the floppy format. Seriously. The readers already buy a lot of graphic novels, they are fine paying more for a product of better quality and not stuff printed on toilet paper with ads for other shit you sell that they may already know about, may see in the stores and most definitly hear about on the internet.

The world Eurocomics is doing considerably better than it was in say the 90s or the early 2000s, dealt with webcomic artists and the like by offering them gigs for oneshots to measure their potential sales, stuff like that. The model of expensive quality product for a reliable and dedicated readership, flagpole titles arround christmas for profit and dumping old material on cheapo softcover into newstands and gas stations is working alright, to the point they don't seem to be that worried about concurrence from other media, at least not on the level of TV in the 90s. publishing manga themselves or buying small publishers when they appeared to bank in on the novelty, get the new readership and sell really cheap products was a genius move too
Japan is still maintaining its industry pretty well. TV tie-in and merchandise is working better than ever though you could argue that when it comes to manga, underpaying everyone might have something to do with how sustainable the business model is.

I'd rather see the industry shift to just trades. I think it would allow for better storytelling in the medium, with writers and artists able to take the time they need to tell coherent and well-thought out stories and make sure that each page is beautifully detailed.

It also would allow...For artists to not suddenly disappear after the 1st issue or randomly get replaced. For writing and art teams to change, after each trade is finished, if you wanted, etc.

Put comics in places where nerds are likely to buy them. At this point, even "nerds" don't read comics -- the comic market is laughably small, and it's absurd to pretend that little growth year-to-year means that the comic industries are successfully capitalizing on so many eyes being on their IPs. Newsflash: they are wasting the opportunity of a lifetime -- an opportunity that almost any medium would destroy a third world country for.

Easiest solution by far: sell comics (i.e. OGNs or trades) with movie tickets. At this point, they could even simplify things and just work through Fandango, since online ticket sales are growing rapidly.

Best solution: sell. floppies. through. Amazon. Every day that I can't buy a physical copy of the latest issue of Batman on Amazon at its sticker price (or the sticker price as an add-on for a $25+ purchase), I KNOW that DC/et al. are missing out on a fuckload of free money. And yes, of course I know this will hurt comic shops, but at a certain point, you have to approach this like the big soda companies did with "soda shops"/"malt shops": is it *really* worth maintaining strong relationships with these old relics, when you could reach a larger audience more effectively through other means?

Paying $3.99 for a sliver of a four or five part story just doesn't fucking work anymore. Especially if you are trying to reach an audience that binges consumes media. Marvel or DC bundling their
titles in a low-cost anthology might work but ultimately I think the era of the floppy is more or less over.

Additionally, Marvel fucked up HARD by allowing their movies to become more engaging than most of their comics.

Comics (or at least the big two) need to be sold in more accesible places. Even in fucking Mexico you can go to any random street corner and find a newspaper stand carrying not only floppies, but hardcovers and TPBs. Grocery stores ranging from 7/11 up to Wal-Mart carry have racks stocked with Spider-Man, Superman, The Walking Dead and even manga like Bleach, InuYasha or the 100th reprint of Evangelion.

Problem is that to get them back on the newstands, it will mean going back to 100% kid friendly fair: no fags, no politics, no gore or sex or anything remotely degenerate. Also, having to pretty much slit the throat and kill the entire TPB market in order to leave customers ZERO CHOICE but to buy the floppies, since you have to refucking train your costumer base to buy your books on the newstand. Ellis did Fell which was an experiment in creating a lower page count, more affordable comic format. He also did FreakAngels which was a five volume series serialized as a webcomic.

the problem is the bar for entry for comics, its a fucking mess. the main heroes have been going on for half a century with constant reboots, retcons, and rewrites. its hard for new readers to start reading when there is no start point.
the reasons why the movies are successful in the first place is because they have planed continuity streamlined by disney, there is straight order watch the films in, the standalone introduction movies and then the team up movies. that rigid order is what they like and its not what they'll get when it comes to comics.

No it's not.
I can tell you for a fact as a european reader I have simply given up on getting into superheroes because it's such a mess. It's great when you have shorter self-contained stories but fuck catching up with hundred of issues, retcons, crossovers and team stories, reboots and all that crap. The labirynth of reprints and things like that just doesn't seem worth getting into,especially considering the money you'll need to invest merely to catch up with the current events, and the time you'll need to put into finding everything too since there may or may not be full reissues (and when there are they are insanely pricey and take ages to be completed because publishers need to hype up their fancy volumes)
Not just that but endless continuities are also a pretty good indication that your stories just won't have any closure either, which sucks.

The market has simply shrunk because kids are no longer a factor, who represented over 80% of all sales for most of comic book history. They simply found a flashier light and moved on.

Add this to the fact reading comics is for nerds in the eyes of a gringo. and the US comic market ends up a really small niche.

The direct market talk is bollocks. The Internet has made everyone aware of every comic title being released. it being put on a new stand or a LCS doesn't matter at all anymore.

I think it's more a matter of content. I mean think about it, there are a lot of manga with large western followings before they are even officially published in the west.
Where is the enjoyable and accessible western comic that people online wait every week/month for? The one that has a solid following that might even touch people who really aren't into comic?
Remember the internet buzz that Wakfu had when it first released in France and it was captivating enough that people fansubbed? Which is the (ongoing) comic book equivalent to that? There isn't any.

Comics are simply not interesting enough to do that. It's an issue of content much more than distribution.

Every grocery store has a magazine section. I've been to many grocery stores where there were comics in those sections in the forms of things like shonen jump. I have never ONCE seen ANYONE even in those fucking sections, to the point that I don't understand why they even exist. Grocery stores aren't going to save the comics industry because people aren't going to go into a grocery store to buy a comic and nobody is going to decide to buy comics just because they saw it while buying groceries.

As for toy stores, Toys'R'Us, the biggest toy store company in the country, is fucking going out of business NEXT WEEK.

Physical retail is collapsing. Comics being available in more physical spaces does nothing for the industry because they're just be jumping from a rapidly sinking ship to a much larger, equally rapidly sinking ship. So then you could ask "well, why don't they just sell digitally and on online retailers like Amazon." Newsflash: THEY DO. And those are where comics are already moving. But that brings us to the next problem, the demographics that prefer buying on Amazon or from comixology are largely the "SJW" parts of the fanbase so pandering to that demographic is what got us into this clusterfuck in the first place.

Outside of the big 2 I can see Dark Horse outliving mostly all of the other companies considering they rely more on trade sales and merchandise than floppy sells, not to mention they produce merchandise for other companies as well.

Granted the loss of the Star Wars property to Marvel thanks to Disney did hurt them.

One positive thing about DH is most of the stuff is creator owned so the death of the publisher itself wouldn't mean the end of the likes of Resident Alien, Hellboy, and Shaolin Cowboy.

Newspaper comics would have to be single issue stories. IMO. As not to alienate any new readers. Leave the on going stuff to a minimum, or exclusively to comic shops.

Speaking of. Five dollar slicks sold exclusively at comic book shops for collectors and enthusiasts.

Side note. A five dollar slick is about the same price as a fifty cent comic from the 1950s. We've been getting a high quality print for roughly the same price as a newspaper print for years now.

Digital side.

Media like Netflix, Hulu, Nicelodeon, Diseny, Cartoon Network, need their own comic book app.

Bi-weekly comics for their shows. As well as to test out new I.P. Get people reading comics and rating the single episode issues before their animated or filmed.

Going this route would take some time to cement.

Also, Raina and Robert Kirkman represent 13% of the industry all by themselves. If you took just their books off of Scholastic and Image and made "Raina Kirkman Publications" it would be the second biggest publisher overall, behind Viz comics. That's probably not great, I don't think even Eiichiro Oda has that high a percentage of the comics market in Japan and he has basically every record for comic sales in the entire world.

Also, Marvel has virtually no backlist. DC has comics by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Brian K Vaughn and Frank Miller that are just going to sell forever. What does Marvel have? Deadpool comics, mostly. Their best selling book was "Civil War". Why aren't they taking Stan Lee Spider-Man books, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee Fantastic Four books and Claremont/Byrne X-Men books and throwing like 8-10 issues in a digest-sized comic for $6.99? It's at least something, and if they find a way to make the coloring not look like ass (muted, flat digital coloring might work) they would probably fly off the shelves, especially relative to their current output, which is fuck-all.

Because the people who keep insisting that it's better to kill the direct market and go sell in grocery stores and convienience stores and newsstands instead, they act like they have no knowledge of how well print has been selling at those places since 2008. Or how it's hard to get comics through newsstand distribution in the first place (both Joe Quesada and Jim Shooter talked about the challenges involved).

I've spent the last 10 years watching grocery stores and pharmacies reduce their shelf space for magazines. If comics had relied on only the US newsstand market, they'd have been fucked even worse!

Comics are one of the worst bangs you can get for your buck. $3-4 a pop for around 10 minutes of entertainment. They were fine 20 years ago when they had next to no real competition, but they just can't match tv, the internet, or video games when it comes to things i'd be willing to spend money on.

I actually missed half of her comics, she wrote some Babysitter Club comics, too, her total units is actually 1.3 million, which is more than DC Comics' 1.2 million units, but DC brought in $23 million. If you counted Raina's books separately, she'd actually be the #2 publisher, behind Viz, since she beats Scholastic-without-Raina too.

It's kind of crazy.

I dunno about Japan but something similar exists in the Franco-Belgian market where in 2015 a single Asterix album (published in late october at that) represented 4.1% of the entire market. Literally one page of Asterix was 0.01% of the market.

Marvel Entertainment has no say over what goes or doesn't go in movies, and Feige and Marvel Studios apparently have no interest in advertizing for them. It would probably need Disney to step in for that to happen, or at least Ike and Feige making up, and I don't see either of those happening.

Diamond I think is a bigger problem than most realize.They have a strangle hold on the market it it seems like they are completely fine with comics they way they are selling.

Another fine point is that as the market turns less of a profit only things that are geared for sales will surive. Capes movies and blockbusters, TV and internet properties sell so those are the comics that will get made while anything outside of that lose the assurance that if they mostly creator driven IPs that they will sell something.

I personally think there is a big disconnect between companies and stores now. I think this mostly applies to the big two. Stores are dropping because they are bringing such horrible talent that it kills people's interest. If stores were closing in the 90s like they are now you would see uproar about it, companies would get involved. Now both don't give a flying crap, Their comics divisions have become so minor in their profit margins that it they get staffed by their worst. Even Image has caught the bug with TV shows.

I feel like companies are treating comics like its some post-profit market and that stores are something they don't need anymore.

My guess is it will continue to be a fairly big backlist title even after the comic finishes. Scott Pilgrim has mostly stopped selling, but that just happened recently and it ended in 2010. Walking Dead will probably go the same way, sellng well enough 5-10 years after it finishes.

Nah, I don't think that really is true. Marvel and DC have been doing reboots, remakes, comic shows and movies, new heroes, reborn old heroes, and free comic book days.

The cliche of it being the same hero for 60 years is only one that is thrown around by people who read comics at this point. They have tried very, very hard to attract new readers and its not working to the desired effect.

For comparison's sake the French market was 459 million Euros (roughly 500 million $ in 2015) in 2015, the comic market was 1.03 billion $ (roughly 950 milion Euros in 2015) the same year. Considering the differences in format and prices I think it's a better comparison than units sold.

That's an oversimplification of the issue. France had its own version of the CCA starting in 1949, and it took until the 70s for adult comics to get a real outlet. And still to this day comics aimed at kids or all ages (like, you know Asterix) still by far sell better than their adult counterpart (and are read by adults).
The thing though is I think people are more okay socially with the idea of enjoying children's entertainment.

This. Comic books were the #1 media for kids entertainment back then, but since the 80's they've been fighting a losing war against videogames. Why would a kid spend $5 on a 20-30 page comic that's 20% ads, when he could spend $10 or $20 on a used game that he could play for years? They lost any chance of gaining a normie market when videogames became acceptable for normies to play.

And as others have said, collected trades have provided a superior alternative to floppies for the main comic reading market. Why buy a bunch of short pieces of a story every month and take a gamble on quality when you can wait until a run is over and get the entire thing in a single book without the ads, knowing full well it will be worth the money? The comic companies accidentally shot themselves in the foot with that one. Also didn't help the used floppy trade any, since you would have to be crazy to spend the money and time hunting down a ton of floppies when you could just get the collection in one book for less money. So now the floppies you collect will never be worth more than a dime a pound, but the collections usually sell for a decent amount used. I'm looking at one Batman collection on Amazon, $50 new, $25 used. You can't get that return on your floppies if you ever decide to condense your collection down, so now buyers have even less reason to buy the floppies.

The sub-par writing and newspaper comic tier artwork doesn't help matters any.

According to Erik Larsen the reason they still publish floppy, trade and digital is because there are people who will only buy one or the other and they need all three to be profitable.

Personally, I think the direct market is going to go under sooner or later and Marvel and DC are going to end up publishing like the manga publishers, digital first followed by physical trades for popular titles. There’s too much stress on comic shops, no new people coming in and the margins are razor thin; attrition is eventually going to be too much to handle.

If they're going to keep doing reboots, they need to do an ACTUAL reboot at start at year 1 with everyone, everything erased no continuity held, nothing.

That's really not the case though.
The thing about the comic industry in France is that every big publisher has a handful of titles that sell incredibly well. As pointed out, the new Asterix albums that come out every other year since a new team picked the characters back up sell ridiculously well. This also happens to a lesser extent with new Blake and Mortimer albums, and with Lucky Luke. The reprints of classic titles always sell pretty well.
However the more niche market is much smaller. It produces a lot of titles, it has a very stable reader base that consumes a lot and does not mind expensive products either. But that is a very marginal readership compared to the classics and kids comics (which sell consistently well although the big titles here change every five years or so since that market changes quickly as the kids grow up and either stop reading comics or move on to manga these days)
The reason why Asterix, Tintin and a lot of the big names in franco-belgian comics aren't seen as just children's entertainment is that they never really were. The prepublication magazines from the 40s to the 60s were always marketed as family entertainment and could fill that role well enough, not to mention the careful writing and levels of reference and humor from basic slapsticks and puns to topical references gave stories a lot of second reading value. Same can't be said about children's comics for the last 15 years, which is why they have a pretty limited shelf life.
also as far as the well being of the publisher goes, having their own in-house collections to translate and publish manga early was a great move

Oh they are not a problem at all. It's just an explanation of the situation and the different markets for a non-french anon. As someone else said, "oversimplification".
Hell the fact that we have such a lively niche market is fucking great. It has done nothing but raise the standards for the quality of the products in a lot of different places.
That's how we ended up with dustcovers on manga and the extra centimeter to open the pages. And that's also how we ended up with trades being better products than the american ones. I've had the chance to compare the original Vertigo trade of V compared to the french version and I was honestly shocked by the american version. Cheap thin paper, softcover, a loot of colour bleed and a pretty bad glue binding. If that's the quality of the products you get (and apparently there are some availability issues too with not everything being reprinted and trades not always happening?) then I am not at all surprised that sales are decreasing and that there is no reliable niche market, and the publishers have no one to blame but themselves for that.

As a kid growing up in France in the 90s the easiest access I had to comics was through our equivalent of news stands, which also happen to sell cigarettes, and my parents happened to be smokers.
I'm not sure if American news stands sell cigarettes, but even if they do you people smoke way less than us since about 20 years.

I think that's the most far-fetched explanation I can think of.

But I think we haven't addressed the elephant in the room:

Mainstream comics need new stories and characters. Let's be real here, Batman has been rebooted and retconned and remade for fucking DECADES. Same for a lot of the other mainstream titles. Not saying that batman and superman need to die obviously but give readers something new, something they can't get from TV and movies yet. But of course, the comic companies have to actually push the new comic, not just leave it to survive on it's own. Advertise it a lil and get people hyped.

-Easy to start. If I want to read Fullmetal Alchemist, I can pick it up and read all the chapters. No retcons and reboots

American comics will benefit greatly from a digital publishing, where all comics for a company can be read at one place.

Maybe make youtube channels with comic and artist spotlights and other shit to get new viewership. Maybe do animated comic readings too

Release completed comics in volumes that can be purchased for a good price

I don't really see why having 1 person as both writer and artist is necessarily a benefit, especially when there are tons of great examples of mange teams. The team behind Death Note and Bakuman or Kazuo Koike who Lone Wolf and Cub, Lady Snowblood, Crying Freeman, and a bunch of other shit with various other artists. Likewise I'm not sure how much creative freedom most manga writers have in practice, at least going by some stories of what editors can force into some series. A lot of DBZ only exists because the editors forced Toriyama to change shit for example.

This idea always struck me as dumb because one of the main reason companies switched to a direct market was because the old method of newsstands/ grocery stores and all that other shit wasn't working any more. The books weren't selling as much even back in the 70s and the profit on each issue was far to low for any of those places to have any interest in keeping them around and most of the stock was returned to publishers in the end, meaning they weren't making much money on this shit anymore either. Selling direct to comic book stores was a better deal for everyone involved since they got a better price for their stock and didn't have to worry about about returns while comic book stores got the books at a cheaper price. Over time this ended up developing a lot of new problems sure but I don't see how going back to a sales method that already failed decades ago is going to help anyone. Personally I think people should just give up on the idea of floppies and switch to a different format that's actually worth buying.

I believe the point is more that artists don't change during a manga's lifespan, and neither do writers. This is a HUGE advantage because it means that you never have to worry about a manga you like suddenly turning to trash because the people who create it were replaced (it can still turn to trash if the person in charge runs out of ideas, which happened to Bleach, but not for external reasons which is a much bigger worry).

Maybe all this talk about distribution models is secondary and the primary problem we have is that the comics published currently are just dull as fuck and not sufficiently interesting to sell massively. Each comic book movie is the equivalent of one graphic novel/trade paperback. Both in terms of story and approximately in terms of costs.
To follow up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you need to buy the equivalent of 2 or 3 graphic novels every year for the last 10 years. You don't need to keep up with graphic novels made decades ago, you don't even need to keep up with the current MCU graphic novels because many of the volumes themselves are relatively self-contained.
By comparison, just the solo Batman in New 52 had 10 volumes, the equivalent of watching 10 Batman movies in 5 years.
That's why comic book sales suck.

There was a huge economic recession and most people were not that well off before it. If they're not that well off they probably can't afford things like comic books and if they could people would tell them they're an idiot for wasting their money on something they don't need.

I stopped buying comics because comic book stores are usually places I find somewhat weird and creepy.

also if you have a spouse in your 30s the costs are overall smaller than if you're single
