The concept of a Red Lotus group felt like an obvious "let's copy the popular stuff the original series did-but evil this time!" ploy. We saw this with "bending removal", which went from the Aang's special finale power to a villian's power, and then we saw it with DARK AVATAR, which is just the avatar but pure evil, and the Red Lotus was just the white lotus BUT EVIL.
The 4 season 3 villains were awesome though. Seeing a bad airbender was cool, we got to see some cool abilities that airbenders would obviously have but never use like stealing people's air to kill them, and then some more crazy ones like "literally just permanent flight".
The explosion woman was nothing new obviously, but her death scene made her entire character worth having. The earth bender was awesome.
Lava bending as a concept is awesome and I was super glad Bolin kept using it in the final season unlike the cool powers of the past, like Bloodbending where people went "this is bad bending even though it can solve all our problems so we won't use it". Even if they understand it's evil and shouldn't be used, imagine how many problems could be solved with it and stop violence when in the right hands. Like, when Kuriva challenges Korra to a 1v1 duel where Kuriva agrees to stop the war and turn around if Korra can beat her using any bending techniques and even the Avatar state, imagine how easy it would be to just bloodbend her into submission, with or without the whole power removal stuff. Yeah, I can understand it's supposed to be a full-moon power, but Korra already handwaved that with 3 separate characters and it could be handwaved by Korra herself with the whole "aang gave it to be when he gave me the ability to restore bending removed by bloodbenders" thing.
The water bender was super cool, seeing another unique fighting style with the concept of using water as your arms.
