it's actually very simple:
1- Toby Fox is friends with Andrew Hussie, creator of Homestuck.
2- Toby composes music for Homestuck, gets noticed by Homestuck's gigantic autistic fanbase.
3- When Undertale gets founded, Hussie promotes it through MSPaint Adventures.
4- Homestuck fanbase notices Undertale.
5- They latch into the game and become fans as well.

Basically, the game already had a gigantic fanbase before it was even announced. It is basically an extension of the Homestuck phenomenon.

story could have been handled better, but overall it was pretty interesting.
Good music, cute characters, unique (if easy, with a few exceptions) gameplay, plus the homestuck fandom latching onto it lead to a perfect storm.

The story was completely unremarkable, the music was absolutely amazing but that's no reason to call them game good when you can just buy the soundtrack instead, and the characters were entirely uninteresting, and Mettaton or whatever he was called and the ghost thing were the only characters with decent jokes, and not even that many.

Art - bad but does it's job.
Gameplay - I always hated the randomness of turnbase RPGs, so I like how the game determines your dodge thru bullet-hell mini games. It was fun.
Story - Pacifist mode is blend but Genocide run is something really special. Games rarely have a serious villain as the MC, so it was the first time I felt so threatening and evil.

I went in when the game was first released, expecting an homage to Earthbound with dumb jokes and surprise spooky shit at the end. Wasn't disappointed; loved it to the end. Overhype killed this game.

That's just not true. Hes probably the 5th or 6th most liked character at this point. In the early days tumblr didn't like him very much cause muh ships but the fandom as a whole chilled out (aka when the brainless fangirls moved on to the next big thing) and now hes pretty well liked barring a few crazy outliers

There are several fan comics; best one currently is "The Anomaly", IMO, since it avoids descending into fanservice and meme-spewing. Characters are interesting, writing is decent, and the art is pretty good.

Undertale went nuclear long before the connection to Homestuck was popularized. I don’t doubt that the fanbases have significant overlap but Undertale is more a product of modern Youtube game streamers (a la FNAF and Doki Doki) than the Homestuck craze (which was long past its prime by 2015). I think it helped Toby get some initial momentum for the game, but its success is more due to the catchy tunes, addictive character design, and eyecatcing gameplay hooks. being a great game didn’t hurt either

No. The actual story isn't long enough to cover a full season of episodes or any type of continuing plot.
The whole story telling element is that you are making choices in the game and you have two polar opposite choices you are allowed to make and the hook is the gameplay mechanics during the random fights and boss battles.
It makes for boring scenes if you have the main character doing the pacifist route and using the genocide route just completely changes the point of the game itself.

I've played maybe 3 bullethell games in my life, nonr of them touhou, 2 of them were flash games, and all 3 were infinitely better than Undertale.

But what I do play is story-driven RPGs, and Undertale fails hard on every single aspect of this, with a combat system so basic, vapid, and repetitive that even ignoring the retardedly low encounter rate, was just fucking boring to play, and completely takes you out of the story in the genocide run and wasn't much better in the pacifist run, it's so empty that even for the final asriel fight its nothing vut spamming items and one other command.

And there is no fucking payoff to any of it, the fights are satisfying the pacifist ending is mediocre, and all the incredibly stupid extras hidden in the game add nothing to the replay value, and because resetting is a relatively important part if the story, the only really complete ending is the genocide ending which ends the replay cycle.

First of all, he still isnt forgiven by Toriel at the end of the game, so its not like he avoids all punishment. Undyne absolutely understands what killing means, because on Neutral routes you can't befriend her if you've killed a single enemy in any battle. You can even play pacifist up to befriending her, but she will "unfriend" you as soon as you kill a monster. Not to mention her anger over you murdering everyone is what powers her up in Genocide route. In the neutral epilogues, if Toriel is dead then Undyne will assume power after Asgore dies and make it her life's mission to lead an army to the surface and wipe out humanity, all because you killed (at least) one monster.

She's a total hypocrite and definitely doesn't see humans as "people" unless you convince her otherwise. This only stick in True Pacifist once everything works out fine and the Alphys pussy makes her forget her genocidal tendencies.

The lesson to be learned is Integrity, as the human (after previously being tempted by Flowey to kill the monsters), makes vows to Toriel to never harm anyone and that they will stay alive for her sake. The Human is of course tempted time and time again to break the promise, but by the time toriel comes to their aid at the end the human has maintained their integrity.
>The next area is Snowdin, one if the longer yet most fun areas, where the Human meets Sans and Papyrus. The lesson here is Kindness. There is a musical rendition of the ever-so-catchy Bonetrousle as Papyrus attempts to catch the Human. Papyrus is pretending to be ruthless but is just a big softy. The human (after some advice from Sans) learns how to show kindness to Papyrus, allowing them to become friends and gang out when no one else will. Papyrus learns it's ok to be nice and that be doesn't have to be ruthless, just determined.

Hard mode is a bad idea because people only ever played the game for the story. The shmup sections were little distractions meant to break up the dialogue. Making those harder would make the game more frustrating, and having no new dialogue would make a replay pointless.

They fight front of an audience as Mettaton attempts to kill the human while performing a musical/dance rendition of 'Death by Glamour'. The human goes along with the damcing and causes Mettaton's limbs to explode from dancing too hard. The whole 'call in' thing goes down and Mettaton decides to stay and entertain the Underground.

Also with a game like undertale it would make more sense that even Chara could be redeemed. I interpreted it as frisk restoring Chara's faith in humanity by the end. Although if this was Toby's intention I do feel that it should have been hinted at more.

Have you ever actually been killed by Toriel on a normal playthrough? She intentionally starts missing you with her attacks when you're at critical HP, throwing fire around you but never directly at you, hoping you'll be scared enough to give up and run. Undertale thrives on the fact that it is a video game. In fact the storytelling of Undertale does not work without it being seen in that medium.

The only way to reconcile this would be if they altered Undertale's themes to fit in another medium. ie. If it was a movie, then things like Determination would be quantified by stuff like tapes skipping or things being reround. If it was a comic it'd probably take advantage of chapter titles, page turns and info boxes to screw with the reader.
Either way you'd have to struggle to give the reader/watcher the same level of emotional investment that you'd get by having a direct input on the character and their actions.

Undertale wraps up so well in the ending there’s not really anywhere to go, and the Underground is too wrapped up in deconstructing/subverting vidya expectations and tropes. Half of the reason it works is it does what cartoons have been doing for ages since the time of Ub Iwerks; having the character reach out of their medium and into our world.

The only thing I’d say works as a continuation is Potoobrigham’s Undertale comics.

Also, by the time you leave the ruins your LV is so high and you're so determined nothing really can put up a fight except an avatar of literally ALL the monsters willpower together and someone fucking with game mechanics. Its like youre an SS Sturmführer, trained all your life with rifle, blade and fist to be the ultimate aryan super warrior and instead of fighting a battle of ultimate showdown all you're doing is putting bullets into jews hiding in attics trying to scurry away from you.

So yeah, youre not meant to enjoy genocide the way you would enjoy a normal RPG. Its a somber, meta experience and a very different and acquired taste. I liked it greatly because its such an unique thing to play through compared to all the other vidya and the controlled, intentional frustration just added to its effects.

And they some how made it boring and tedious while all other games make it fun. And the combat isn't fun outside of genocide runs either, the genocide run just demands you do even more of it than the normal game.

Grinding is nothing new. It is literally more fun to hatch eggs for IVs in pokemon than to run around in fucking undertale trying to get an enemy to show up just for the slow repetitive combat to start.

There are plenty of games where you have a character who simply dies for plot to happen, or even more interedting games where you can prevent such characters from dying resulting in an error. Like Witcher 1, where you can keep the traitor Witcher alive by acting quickly and the result is everyone talking like he’s dead while he stands in the boss room saying and doing nothing.

Asgores and Toriels attack and defense are the same, Asgore has much more health. He's also heavily armored, so we can chalk it up to tht, odds are they're just as strong as eachother.

The genocide ending is the most redeeming part of the game (not that it makes the rest of the game or run worth it). It's the one decent bit of "metanarrative" in the game. It actually does a decent job of incorperating the reset mechanic into the story without it feeling gimmicky and San's recognition of it, actually makes make him feel sympathetic and pained and effectively casts the player as the villain and tHe end is an ACTUAL ending considering it stops the canonical reset cycle.

But it's basically the same shit. It's just that RPGmaker is focused on RPGs (duh), while Gamemaker is focused for general game development.
They all have the same problems, though:
-Poor optimization
-Plenty of slowdown
-Eats away memory
-Engine has problems with multiple subrutines

All at the cost of being easy to program.

Toriel is not stronger than Asgore, they even have the same stats.

If it makes you feel better about it then take somnolence in the fact that both Asgore and Toriel never show off their actual strength. Toriel holds back because she doesn't want to kill you and Asgore is holding back big time in his fight because he wants you to kill him.
Its obvious for Toriel because of stuff like the fire avoiding you and its obvious for Asgore due to stuff like him not looking at Frisk, and the fact that Asgore literally can't kill you unless you run out of food or don't heal because he ends his turn as soon as you would take a fatal blow and just leaves you at 1.

I don't really think so. They don't pose much of a threat at all to someone like him. The blind dog and the dog couple could be easily incapacitated. Even if they are trying to kill him they wouldn't be competent at it. I'd think Frank would figure they're just trying to protect their species from something they've been taught their whole life was an enemy. If he can help it then he won't kill them.

These monsters are way different from criminals firstly, and secondly really low level criminals like Mickey Fondozzi have been spared by Frank. Frank doesn't really bother with non violent crime since he has bigger fish to fry such as the mafia and psychopaths like Nicky Cavella.

If he didn't know anything about the situation and did not know the reason they were attacking, sure. He might even be justified because he was defending himself.

But Frank is methodical. He doesn't like getting into a situation he doesn't know about. And as soon as he finds himself in Undertale he is going to learn everything he can to get a grasp on the situation and figure out his next move. And he is going to learn everything he can from Toriel. He is going to learn about the place and why they are there.

Oh hell no. That's not Frank at all. Frank never says a word to anybody unless it's a threat or a warning. He may try to warn them first off but at most he is going to incapacitate them. I like how the Chara narrator thing is subtly hinted desu. It's one of the most interesting part of the game to me, there's actually a lot of evidence pointing towards it but it's all fairly small things that are easy to miss.

Do you realize that Flowey could reset anytime before you fell, not just during his fight? Undertale is a game that gives you the possibility to complete it without killing anyone. But once you do that, you start wandering what will happen if you take the other route. This is exactly the same thing that happened to Flowey, who started killing others just to see what will happen, the same thing you do. It's not a pointless gimmick, it's in fact crucial to the themes of the game and brings meaning to the application of "we're not so different" cliche.
