Naruto too, it's shit, so shit, but each character had skills and a weak character could wipe the floor with a much stronger one just because they had the right gimmick to deal with them.
Meanwhile, you know exactly what will happen in any DB fight from Raditz onwards. Meaningless hits, beamspam, then a biiiig beam, maybe a biiig punch.
That's what really blew me away all these years ago when, after getting bored with DBZ, they started broadcasting Rurouni Kenshin where I live. Each hit mattered. Fights were won not by the last attack, but by the last word. Sometimes the big finisher attack was just a formality, Kenshin would break his enemies down with just the right remark or observation. Which made the power escalation work in that series, when Saito was the one who broke Kenshin down, when Shishio's philosophy meant nothing Kenshin could say would change his mind, etc.
But not DBZ, the closest it ever came to something like that was enemies freaking out when they saw Goku reaching A REALLY BIG SHINY NUMBER
