Generated lightning =/= real lightning. Otherwise Zuko would be like mach 180+ for running in front of Azula's bolt in the finale. I doubt they'd be able to react to bullets, perhaps a very talented metalbender could affect the trajectory slightly at most.

What I find to be a major lore fuckup is that metal is inert in ATLA. But it contains some earth particles that can be bent.

Which pretains through Korra as well, platinum is repeatedly reffered to as "pure" and thus unbendable. But it doesn't mesh with liquid extraction scene.

So far shock gloves have only been shown working on contact, guns can be used over a large distance.

Basically just strength amplifiers still lack the advantage of fighting over a distance which so far is limited only to benders and archers.
Keep in mind that by the end of Korra their world was starting to implement things like airplanes into combat how exactly is air to air combat going to work without some form of high energy projectile weapon?

Now if either shock gloves could be made to work over large distances or maybe miniature versions of the spirit cannon could be made that could potentially fill the niche firearms have in our world.

I think it'd work if the protag were a bender that focused more on practicing their specific element, and getting creative with it. The Avatar in general only learns the surface level techniques of each... It would be neat to see like some water bender experimenting with boiling steam and using the water in the air and plants around them.

Zaheer would've obviously been Korra's airbending instructor, thus he really had to do his research. For all we know he might've even incorporated airbending moves into his non-bender martial arts. The fact he knew how to "be the leaf" is proof that he must know the basics, at least.
