As cliche as it sounds he just to be normal.
I don't think it's an accident that his 'ideal' of a perfect life is on Krypton and not Earth. Because he could never be a normal man on Earth. But on krypton, he's just a regular-joe who deals with regular problem in a world not so different from ours.
There's still crime and problems on Krypton. He still gets into arguments with father.
I think that's what makes the ending of it that much heartbreaking, because it's not just Superman realizing that this dream isn't real, it's him accepting that there's no way he can ever have that normal life. That he'll always be Superman, and he'll always have to bear the weight of that title.
At least that's my take of it.
It also doesn't help that Mongul was wrecking his friends and shit back on the outside.
