Although to be fair, some goth styles borrow from mod and some mod girls back in the day took a lot of inspiration from early goth icons.

The difference between emo and goth is mostly the musical influences. Goth deals with all kinds of shit, from down to earth sentimental stuff to occult themes, post-apocalyptic fear, fantasy and literature. Emo is just about being edgy.
In fashion, emo tends to mix black or white with very vibrant colors. While certain goth styles do use vibrant colors, most prefer less eye-raping combinations outside cybergoth ravers. Goth is a staple of the 80s, and thus goth hairdos tend to be extravagant and very "80s like", like Siouxsie Sioux or take inspiration from 50s nostalgia with a Beehive like Elvira, the rich history of goth-before-goth provides lots of inspiration from the 60s, like Morticia Addams, and even going as far as the 1920s with stars like Theda Bara. Emo is pretty much a millennial thing, and doesn't leave room for that much creative input. Most emo hairdos consist in simply covering half of your face or at least your whole forehead, and often use vibrant "look at me please" colors and big, impractical accessories.
You'll just have to train your eyes, man. Goth and emo are much like porn and anime, you just know when you see them.
