>>98181937>>98182389Cyclops is basically Robin grown up.
He spent a terrible childhood inside an orphanage run by a maniacal Victorian mad scientist who created it just to experiment on him. This is after watching his parents die and losing track of his brother. He's all alone and abused and that's the only life he can remember.
Cyclops, when Xavier encounters him, is probably one bad day away from shooting up a school. He has nothing to live for and every reason to hate the world.
In comes Xavier, who tells him he's special and offers him a home and a family and a purpose, and Scott jumps at the opportunity. He spends years training with this man, the only father figure he's had since he was 10, trying his best to follow Xavier's teachings and to make him proud. He finds friends and romance and respect from his peers.
And then the love of his life dies, and he leaves the X-Men to grieve. He's alone, adrift once more, and falls in love with the first kind redhead he meets. He's happy with her. They get married and have a kid. He's a functioning adult.
But he gets word that Jean's alive and he abandons everything and dons the spandex once more. Not just because he never got over her, but because the X-Men are his real family and his home. This is why he's been one of, if not the, most consistent members of the team - it's his life.
Through thick and thin, better and worse, he stays with this colorful cast of characters, sacrificing everything to be the perfect leader, the perfect hero, the perfect son.
The tragedies keep coming - the Genoshan genocide, getting possessed by Apocalypse, his marriage with Jean falling apart and her dying (for real). And then he finds out Xavier, whom he dedicated his entire life to, was a crook who covered up the death of his brother, and did tons more shady stuff.
