There's a difference between nudity and sexualisation. Again, look at the bathhouse scene in Only Yesterday and examine how the characters in the scene are portrayed in comparison to hot-springs episodes in whatever trash anime comes to mind first.
"Lewdness" - raunch - is sexuality that goes beyond the needs of the plot and the themes of the work. It exists to titillate and play to the crowd, to excite the baser emotions. By definition, it lacks substance.
As an aside, I think that Tom's handling the sexuality in GC very well. It's appropriate to the setting and serves to advance characterisation.
